Senior Backend Engineer - Commodities

Location: Hybrid in Athens or Hungary

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate platform components for real-time inland supply chain intelligence.
• Develop high-throughput streaming ingestion using Kafka, Airflow, Python, and FastAPI, while contributing to TypeScript and Vue web applications.
• Lead subsystem architecture through design specifications, peer reviews, and build-versus-adapt decisions.
• Establish SLOs, observability, on-call operations, and incident response practices.
• Build data quality frameworks for telemetry validation, reconciliation, and time-series monitoring.
• Collaborate with marine tracking, data platform, product, and customer teams; mentor mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with distributed production systems.
• Experience architecting event-driven or data-intensive systems with Kafka or comparable message queues.
• Strong Python backend engineering and REST API design experience, including FastAPI or similar technologies.
• Experience with TypeScript and Vue for contributing to frontend surfaces.
• Experience managing production cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, including SLOs, incident management, and observability.
• Ability to mentor engineers and work directly with end users and stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Experience with Scala or operating Elasticsearch clusters at scale.
• Experience with IoT telemetry, remote sensor feeds, time-series data, or geospatial datasets.
• Knowledge of energy, oil and gas, or global commodities markets.
• Experience as an early or founding engineer in a new product initiative.
