Director, Technical Accounting – Investments

Location: San Francisco, CA or Seattle, WA; hybrid policy requires staff to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time.

What you will do

• Own technical accounting for strategic investments, joint ventures, partnership structures, and related financing and equity instruments from entry through exit.
• Partner with Corporate Development, Legal, Tax, Treasury, FP&A, and leadership on investment structures, deal documents, and accounting conclusions.
• Lead portfolio reviews covering classification, consolidation, VIE analysis, impairment, fair value, equity method accounting, follow-on investments, conversions, and exits.
• Manage investment rollforwards, reconciliations, portfolio reporting, financial statement reviews, and investment disclosures.
• Direct third-party valuation specialists and review fair values for investments, warrants, derivatives, and other Level 3 instruments.
• Build scalable intake processes, approval gates, memo templates, quarterly checklists, and SOX-ready controls while supporting M&A accounting and purchase accounting as needed.

Requirements

• Significant Big Four experience, ideally in a National Office, Transaction/Deal Advisory, Capital Markets, or Accounting Advisory group, combined with in-house technology company experience.
• Deep US GAAP expertise covering investments, equity method accounting, consolidation, VIEs, fair value measurement, and business combinations.
• Experience owning a portfolio of minority or strategic investments, including quarterly impairment and fair value monitoring.
• Proven ability to lead complex valuations and direct or challenge third-party specialists on private company fair value, warrants, options, impairment, and purchase price allocation models.
• Proficiency with accounting systems, preferably Workday, consolidation tools, and advanced Excel or financial modeling.
• Minimum education: bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. An active CPA license and 10+ years of progressive accounting experience are preferred.

Nice to have

• Practitioner-level expertise in ASC 321, 323, 810, 820, 815, 825, 805, 808, or 606.
• Experience building investment accounting processes and SOX-compliant controls from the ground up.
• Experience with AI and technology structures involving compute arrangements, warrants, revenue-share partnerships, or strategic investor rights.
• Experience using Claude or other AI tools to automate portfolio monitoring, memo drafting, and close activities.
