Quantum Physicist – System Modeling & Operation Optimization

Location: On-site in Broomfield, Colorado, United States. Candidates must be U.S. Persons; candidates must not be People's Republic of China or Russian nationals unless also U.S. citizens.

Base pay: $148,000–$199,000 annually, plus bonus and equity eligibility.

What you will do

• Develop and validate theoretical and numerical models of trapped-ion quantum operations, including laser–ion interactions, motional dynamics, error sources, and decoherence.
• Analyze experimental data to identify performance limitations and recommend improvements to operating parameters, control sequences, and calibration routines.
• Collaborate with system operators and engineers to design experiments, interpret results, and implement improvements on quantum hardware.
• Build operation error models based on measured system behavior and prioritize the dominant sources of performance loss.
• Perform analyses and trade studies informing hardware specifications, control approaches, and future quantum computer concepts.
• Develop reusable modeling, analysis, and automation software and communicate findings through documentation, presentations, and publications.

Requirements

• PhD in physics or a closely related field completed before the start date.
• At least 8 years of experience, including PhD research, in atomic physics, quantum computing, quantum information, or a related field.
• Must be a U.S. Person: U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status.
• Must not be a People's Republic of China or Russian national unless also a U.S. citizen.
• Strong foundations in atomic systems, coherent quantum control, trapped-ion quantum computing, QCCD architectures, and laser cooling.
• Scientific programming, modeling, data analysis, experimental collaboration, and technical communication skills, including published results.

Nice to have

• Experience modeling laser noise, drift, crosstalk, motional heating, calibration errors, and other experimental effects.
• Experience benchmarking qubit operations and connecting measured performance to physical error mechanisms.
• Familiarity with experimental control systems and automated calibration.
