Senior Scientist – EUV Research

Location: San Diego, California, United States. On-campus work is required, including extended periods in cleanroom and laboratory environments; travel may be required based on business needs.

Salary: $127,200–$174,900 base annual salary.

What you will do

• Guide the architecture and development of molten-tin droplet generation systems for next-generation high-power EUV light sources.
• Lead droplet-generation hardware design, rapid prototyping, metrology development and high-pressure system demonstrations.
• Define scientific learning objectives, experimental designs, technology roadmaps, performance requirements and design guidelines.
• Develop and execute subsystem-to-system performance tests, analyze results and troubleshoot droplet, tin-delivery and optical-system issues.
• Build and experimentally validate droplet-generator models, prioritize model improvements and maintain model-development roadmaps.
• Document technical learning, communicate findings to engineering and product-development teams, and lead small cross-competence research efforts.

Requirements

• PhD or MS degree with at least 3 years of relevant experience in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, physics, optics or an equivalent field.
• Hands-on experience designing and building complex, preferably high-pressure systems, including prototyping, characterization, troubleshooting and system-level demonstrations.
• Strong scientific research, metrology development, experimental data analysis and scientific communication skills.
• Experience with experimental data-analysis tools such as Matlab or Python and data-acquisition systems such as NI LabVIEW.
• Ability to manage and lead research projects involving multiple stakeholders, work collaboratively and communicate clearly with varied audiences.
• Must be legally authorized to access United States-controlled technology before beginning work.

Nice to have

• Experience with glass, ceramics, refractory materials and high-pressure sealing in corrosive environments.
• Knowledge of microfluidics, liquid-jet breakup, droplet coalescence, piezoelectricity, acoustics or related modeling.
• Experience with high-pressure applications, nozzle design, sprays, injectors, droplet formation or common-rail diesel systems.
• Experience designing resonant cavities, liquid energy-transfer systems or piezo-driven systems.
