Senior Backend Engineer (Python/Django)

Location: Hybrid London office setup with fully remote working available across European countries where hirify.global employs or engages remote engineers; the role includes the option to work abroad.

hirify.global is a property technology platform that helps housing providers, local authorities, housing associations, asset managers, and contractors coordinate repairs, maintenance, and contractor workflows across the UK and Germany.

What you will do

• Build and maintain APIs, microservices, and data pipelines using Python, Django, Django REST Framework, and FastAPI.
• Design service boundaries, API contracts, relational data models, integration flows, ERDs, and technical diagrams for complex property operations.
• Develop asynchronous and event-driven workflows with Celery and Redis, and safely evolve PostgreSQL schemas while optimizing database performance.
• Write automated tests, integrate them into CI/CD, and improve observability through logs, metrics, traces, and alerts.
• Diagnose production incidents and design for security, resilience, performance, and data integrity across business-critical workflows.
• Collaborate with product, frontend, and quality engineers; review designs and code; and coach junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial commercial experience with Python and Django.
• Expert knowledge of Python, Django, object-oriented design, API design, service-oriented architecture, distributed systems, and asynchronous processing.
• Production experience with Django services on AWS and Kubernetes, plus Django REST Framework or FastAPI, PostgreSQL, Redis, Celery, and CI/CD.
• Strong experience designing and safely evolving complex relational data models in large, long-lived production codebases.
• Ability to turn incomplete product requirements into clear technical designs covering assumptions, architecture, data models, failure modes, security, observability, rollout, rollback, and testing.
• Clear written and verbal English communication is required.

Nice to have

• Experience using AI coding tools such as Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent in a professional spec-driven development workflow.
• Experience improving engineering practices through reusable patterns, review checklists, examples, and documentation.
