Senior Staff Platform Engineer (Istio)

Location: US Remote; compensation range is specified for US-based candidates

Salary: $250,000–$280,000 annually, plus potential equity

What you will do

• Set technical direction for organization-wide platform architecture and cross-functional infrastructure initiatives.
• Lead service mesh adoption across independent clusters and business units, including Istio mTLS, traffic policies, and multi-cluster rollouts.
• Shape multi-region resilience architecture and AI-enriched service catalog capabilities.
• Own testing infrastructure strategy across iteration environments, pre-production gates, and multi-service validation.
• Lead infrastructure consolidation, CI/CD platform changes, artifact registry modernization, dependency upgrades, and technical debt reduction.
• Mentor Staff and Senior engineers, coordinate execution across engineering organizations, and define metrics for platform adoption, reliability, cost, and developer experience.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience in Platform, Infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles, including ownership of multi-team or multi-business-unit initiatives.
• Production-proven expertise in Kubernetes/EKS, service mesh technology, preferably Istio, and Infrastructure-as-Code such as Terraform.
• Experience leading complex multi-quarter programs from architecture through execution, including cost, risk, and phased planning.
• Experience debugging distributed production incidents involving proxy or sidecar failures, cross-service authentication, and environment configuration drift.
• Proficiency in at least one of Go, Python, TypeScript, or Java.
• Ability to influence without direct authority and mentor Staff-level engineers across a broader engineering organization.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI-native platform tooling, agentic tooling, MCP-backed APIs, and production AI-agent deployment paths.
• Experience with infrastructure consolidation, cloud cost optimization, CI/CD migrations, or vendor consolidation.
• Experience with multi-region or high-availability architecture, including RPO/RTO planning and journey-level SLOs.
• Experience authoring RFCs and presenting technical proposals to senior engineering leadership.
