Data & BI Engineer (BigQuery, Spanner & Looker)

Location: Bucharest Office, Romania; hybrid work with the option to work from home two days per week

What you will do

• Design and optimize Cloud Spanner schemas, keys, indexes, interleaved tables, transactions, and queries.
• Build and operate GCP pipelines that move and transform operational data from Spanner into BigQuery using federated queries, scheduled queries, and BigQuery Data Transfer Service.
• Develop partitioned and clustered BigQuery warehouse layers, analytical SQL, reporting views, and reusable data marts.
• Extend the Looker semantic layer with models, views, explores, dashboards, PDTs, tests, and custom visualizations.
• Implement data quality, freshness, reconciliation, monitoring, alerting, security, and governance across the data and BI layer.
• Orchestrate jobs with Cloud Workflows, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, and Cloud Scheduler, while contributing to Terraform infrastructure and collaborating with analysts, product managers, and engineers.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field.
• Professional experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, BI development, or a related area.
• Strong SQL and hands-on BigQuery experience, including partitioning, clustering, window functions, scheduled queries, and cost optimization.
• Hands-on Cloud Spanner or comparable distributed relational database experience covering schema design, DDL/DML, indexes, transactions, and query optimization.
• Hands-on Looker/LookML development and experience building GCP pipelines, with proficiency in Python.
• Experience with data modeling, Terraform, Git, CI/CD, data quality, observability, security, governance, and PII handling.

Nice to have

• Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer or Associate Cloud Engineer certification.
• Looker LookML Developer, Looker Business Analyst, or Terraform Associate certification.
• Custom Looker visualizations, Dataform or dbt, and marketing, campaign, or social-media data experience.
