Staff Software Engineer - Connectivity (Apache Arrow)

What you will do

• Own medium-to-large connectivity features and service components from problem definition through production release and operational handoff.
• Define milestones, acceptance criteria, dependencies, estimates, risks, and execution plans for complex engineering goals.
• Design scalable systems across drivers, protocols, client libraries, connectors, and distributed services, documenting trade-offs and architecture decisions.
• Lead root-cause analysis across client/server, protocol, network, authentication, metadata, and distributed-system boundaries.
• Build API stability, compatibility, interoperability, performance, reliability, observability, and diagnostics coverage.
• Collaborate with Product, Query Execution, QA, Support, SRE, Documentation, and external technology partners while mentoring engineers and contributing to relevant open-source projects.

Requirements

• 8+ years of production software engineering experience or equivalent depth in complex systems and substantial team-area ownership.
• Deep proficiency in Java, C++, Rust, Go, or another systems or services language, with the ability to work across adjacent languages and frameworks.
• Experience designing and debugging APIs, protocols, client libraries, drivers, or distributed services.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, concurrency, asynchronous programming, networking, failure handling, and distributed-system boundaries.
• Experience building unit, integration, compatibility, performance, or reliability tests and working with CI/CD, packaging, releases, and quality controls.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience; demonstrated communication, influence, mentorship, and coaching skills.

Nice to have

• Experience with JDBC, ODBC, ADBC, Apache Arrow, Arrow Flight SQL, SQL engines, databases, data platforms, or source connectors.
• BI interoperability experience with Power BI, Tableau, Excel, or similar tools.
• Knowledge of OAuth, OIDC, TLS, enterprise authentication, metadata discovery, or query pushdown.
• Experience with cross-platform native builds, packaging, release engineering, compatibility certification, observability, or production diagnostics.
• Contributions to Apache Arrow or other relevant open-source projects.
