Process Safety Engineer (Sustainable Energy)

Location: Liverpool, United Kingdom. The role requires eligibility to work in the UK and a full UK/EU driving licence. Hybrid working options may apply where applicable.

What you will do

• Provide specialist process safety engineering support across gas-powered generation, CHP, biogas, hydrogen, BESS, and other sustainable energy projects.
• Lead and facilitate HAZOP, LOPA, FMEA, SIL, and other formal risk-based safety assessments.
• Integrate process safety requirements into equipment, systems, plant designs, installation, commissioning, and operations.
• Prepare and review risk assessments, safety cases, hazardous area classifications, operating procedures, and other safety documentation.
• Support incident and near-miss investigations, emergency response planning, safe systems of work, and corrective actions.
• Deliver process safety training, engage clients and regulators, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.

Requirements

• Degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Proven process safety engineering experience in power generation, energy, oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, or a similar industrial sector.
• Experience leading or facilitating HAZOP, LOPA, and other formal process safety assessments.
• Strong knowledge of process safety principles, risk management, industrial process systems, control systems, safety instrumented systems, COMAH, ATEX, and relevant ISO standards.
• Eligible to work in the UK and hold a full UK/EU driving licence.
• Strong analytical, communication, planning, project management, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Nice to have

• Professional registration or progress toward Chartered Engineer status.
• IChemE Process Safety, NEBOSH Process Safety Management, or equivalent qualification.
• Experience with hydrogen, renewable energy, CHP, biogas, gas-powered generation, or COMAH-regulated projects.
• Knowledge of Functional Safety and Safety Instrumented Systems under IEC 61511.
