Backend Engineer

Location: Arlington, Virginia, United States; on-site. U.S. citizenship required; no active security clearance required, though some positions may require eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.

Base salary: $192,000–$281,000 annually. Estimated total compensation: $281,000–$455,000, including target bonus and estimated equity value.

What you will do

• Architect and build high-throughput backend services processing real-time operational data.
• Design resilient, observable, performance-tuned distributed and event-driven systems across cloud and on-prem environments.
• Define stable APIs and integrate backend services with frontend and external consumers.
• Lead technical design reviews, architecture decisions, roadmap planning, and end-to-end delivery.
• Improve engineering standards through code reviews, testing strategies, CI/CD, incident practices, and technical mentorship.
• Troubleshoot complex production issues, lead incident response, and develop durable fixes with product and operational stakeholders.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building scalable backend systems in production.
• 4+ years of experience with Go, or equivalent server-side or systems programming experience in Java, Kotlin, C#, Python, C, C++, or Rust.
• Experience designing distributed systems, event-driven architectures, messaging systems, and consistency strategies.
• Experience building and operating cloud-native services, preferably with AWS, plus strong security fundamentals.
• Experience leading technical initiatives and mentoring engineers through technical guidance, code reviews, and feedback.
• U.S. citizenship is required; no active clearance is required for this role.

Nice to have

• Experience with graph databases such as Neo4j or AWS Neptune and relational databases such as Postgres, MySQL, or MariaDB.
• Background in defense, intelligence, or security-focused products with real operational users.
• Experience shipping large-scale streaming or near-real-time data processing systems.
• Experience integrating ML or AI capabilities into production systems.
• Open-source contributions or personal projects demonstrating strong engineering craft.
