Tutor (Special Education)

Location: On-site, in-home tutoring in San Carlos, California, United States

Pay: $25–$35 per hour; approximately 15 hours per month, twice a week in 1.25-hour sessions

What you will do

• Provide 1:1 academic and language support in English language arts, communication, and foundational math.
• Teach phonics, letter-sound relationships, sight words, decoding, reading comprehension, vocabulary, handwriting, sentence formation, and early writing.
• Use Japanese to clarify instructions, support comprehension, and reinforce academic concepts.
• Adapt instruction to the student’s developmental, academic, communication, and language needs.
• Use repetition, modeling, visual supports, hands-on activities, positive reinforcement, and calm redirection.
• Incorporate interests such as Minecraft and LEGO to maintain engagement and motivation.

Requirements

• Fluent Japanese and English required.
• Experience tutoring or supporting elementary-age students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
• Experience working with students who have speech delays or limited English proficiency.
• Strong knowledge of foundational literacy, phonics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, early writing, and elementary-level math.
• Ability to support communication, provide repetition and prompting, and adjust instruction to the student’s level.
• Patient, energetic, engaging, and comfortable supporting mild frustration-related behaviors.
