Contracts Specialist

Location: Hybrid, with office attendance three days per week in Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Armonk, NY; Kansas City, MO; or Fort Wayne, IN, US. Visa sponsorship, visa transfers, visa extensions, and relocation support are not available.

Salary: Estimated annual base salary of $88,000–$132,000 for New York and Armonk, NY, or $80,000–$120,000 for Chicago, Fort Wayne, and Kansas City.

What you will do

• Draft, review, revise, and increasingly own Life & Health traditional reinsurance contracts, addenda, and related documents.
• Translate technical and commercial inputs into precise, accurate, and enforceable contractual language reflecting deal structure, underwriting intent, pricing assumptions, and agreed terms.
• Manage quality and deadlines across multiple concurrent contract assignments.
• Assess contractual, commercial, and operational risks, develop sound positions, and identify approval pathways.
• Collaborate with client managers, underwriting, pricing, claims, legal, and operations teams, and participate in discussions with clients and counterparties.
• Improve standard wordings, templates, playbooks, workflow tools, contract management platforms, and GenAI-supported ways of working.

Requirements

• Strong experience drafting, reviewing, and/or negotiating complex commercial agreements, producing clear, precise, and enforceable contractual language.
• Strong analytical and legal reasoning skills, including the ability to identify issues, assess contractual risk, and develop practical solutions.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder-engagement skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts clearly and build trusted relationships.
• Sound judgment and business orientation, with the ability to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and balance risk with commercial objectives.
• Intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn complex products, transactions, and reinsurance concepts.
• Comfort and curiosity with workflow platforms, contract management systems, and GenAI applications.

Nice to have

• Experience in Life & Health insurance, reinsurance, financial services, or another complex or highly regulated commercial environment.
• Experience drafting or negotiating reinsurance treaties or other complex financial or transactional agreements, including direct engagement with clients or counterparties.
• Legal education or experience in a law firm, in-house legal team, contracts function, or comparable sophisticated contract role.
• Familiarity with reinsurance structures, underwriting concepts, Life & Health products, or US, Canadian, or Caribbean insurance markets.
