TL;DR
Staff Software Engineer, Android (Medical Imaging): Building native Android applications that reinvent the ultrasound experience with an accent on Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, modular architecture, and integration with medical imaging hardware and AI. Focus on evolving complex Android codebases, developing deep learning and telemedicine features, and collaborating across product, clinical, hardware, cloud, and imaging teams.

Location: Remote role for candidates authorized to work in the United States. Butterfly's general hybrid model requires two or more office days per week for most positions, but this role is designated remote.

Salary: $165,000–$180,000 annually, plus bonus, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

  • Build native Android applications for mobile ultrasound and medical imaging experiences.
  • Collaborate with Android and iOS engineers to clarify ambiguous requirements and solve complex product problems.
  • Work with product managers, designers, clinical professionals, hardware, cloud, machine learning, control software, and imaging science teams.
  • Develop efficient, well-tested Kotlin code using Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, GraphQL, and established architecture patterns.
  • Work in a complex modular Android codebase and evolve its architecture.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to deep learning, telemedicine, and Butterfly iQ device integration.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional native Android application development.
  • Strong Kotlin, coroutine, and reactive framework design skills.
  • Strong experience with Jetpack Compose and View-based UI development.
  • Strong JUnit unit testing skills and knowledge of Espresso UI automation.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required; immigration sponsorship is not available.

Nice to have

  • Experience with JNI/NDK bridging to native C++ code and complex internal libraries.
  • Experience with Gradle multi-module builds and modularized Android architecture.
  • Knowledge of graphics rendering and image processing, including OpenGL ES or Vulkan.
  • Python or C++ experience for collaboration with device software and imaging teams.
