R&D Mass Spectrometry Instrument Scientist

Salary: $175,968–$274,950 per year, plus eligibility for bonus, stock, and benefits.

What you will do

• Initiate, design, and execute research and development strategies for mass spectrometry hardware, embedded software, applications, and complete instruments.
• Develop and optimize systems involving ionization, ion optics, vacuum systems, ion detection, high-voltage power supplies, RF electrodes, and digitizers.
• Investigate and test discoveries through experimentation, troubleshoot equipment, and validate data collection processes.
• Lead prototype design and assembly, quality assurance testing, product integration, manufacturing knowledge transfer, and sustaining engineering.
• Collaborate with Marketing, Product Support, Manufacturing, and other multidisciplinary teams as an internal technical consultant.
• Contribute to publications, application notes, conference presentations, patent applications, and technology due diligence activities.

Requirements

• PhD in Physics or a closely related scientific discipline.
• Typically 10+ years of relevant experience and demonstrated success in mass spectrometer instrument development.
• Hands-on expertise in ion optics, performance optimization, contamination control, vacuum performance, materials selection, prototyping, integration, and experimental design.
• Experience with mass spectrometry detector technologies, including MCP-based detectors, as well as high-voltage and RF power supplies.
• Practical high-vacuum system design experience and proficiency with simulation tools such as SIMION, ANSYS, or equivalent.
• Strong Python programming, materials science knowledge, independent execution, proposal development, and complex technical troubleshooting skills.

Nice to have

• Advanced or specialized experience leading scientific or technical development initiatives in mass spectrometry.
• Ability to influence system-level design decisions through cross-disciplinary technical expertise.
