Assignment Desk Editor & Producer

Location: San Antonio, TX, with coverage responsibilities for Austin and San Antonio newsrooms.

What you will do

• Identify, research, verify, develop, write, and produce high-impact stories for broadcast and digital platforms.
• Lead or support editorial meetings, establish coverage priorities, and develop distinctive story angles and follow-ups.
• Coordinate breaking news, planned coverage, interviews, field logistics, crews, newsroom resources, and outside agencies.
• Monitor scanners, newsroom feeds, wire services, social media, and other sources to identify developing stories and act before deadlines.
• Line produce newscasts and strengthen story presentation through video, graphics, live elements, sound, writing, timing, and reporter involvement.
• Work across reporters, photographers, producers, newsroom leadership, and digital teams to move confirmed information and content quickly between platforms.

Requirements

• Strong written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish.
• Strong news judgment, journalistic urgency, editorial leadership, organization, and decision-making skills in a fast-paced newsroom.
• Ability to manage breaking news and multiple deadlines, communicate priorities, adapt coverage plans, and collaborate across newsroom teams.
• Experience monitoring scanners, newsroom feeds, wire services, social media, and digital sources to identify and verify developing stories.
• Proficiency with newsroom computer systems and software, including iNews, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with video systems, incoming feeds, and non-linear editing tools.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, overnights, weekends, and holidays. Ability to stand, walk, bend, type, edit, reach, and sit for up to eight hours.

Nice to have

• BA/BS in Journalism, Mass Communications, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• At least two years of newsroom experience as a producer, assignment editor, or in a similar editorial role, preferably in a medium-to-large market.
• Experience developing compelling newscasts, advancing breaking and enterprise stories, leading editorial discussions, and coordinating daily coverage.
• Understanding of digital and social media strategies, audience behavior, and Hispanic community issues.
