Location: Boulder, Colorado, United States. Work may take place in office, laboratory, industrial, research, and field environments; field assignments may require travel and work in variable environmental conditions. Hybrid staff are expected to work on-site approximately 3 days per week.
Hiring range: $128,520–$167,180 per year.

What you will do
- Lead complex computational research initiatives in Earth system science.
- Develop numerical methods, algorithms, and scalable computational frameworks for atmospheric and environmental simulations.
- Direct the implementation and optimization of scientific software for high-performance computing environments.
- Configure and iteratively develop JEDI coupled data assimilation capabilities for GFS, including marine observations, sea-surface-sensitive radiances, and sea ice freeboard data.
- Analyze large-scale simulations, validate models, assess assimilation impacts, and communicate results through visualizations, publications, reports, and presentations.
- Lead multidisciplinary teams, mentor computational scientists, coordinate with NWS/OMD and partner agencies, and support proposals and operational integration.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree with 15 years of related experience, master’s degree with 11 years, PhD with 7 years, or an equivalent combination.
- Expert knowledge of numerical methods, parallel computing, high-performance computing architectures, and scalable software architectures.
- Experience developing and optimizing computational algorithms for large-scale environmental simulations.
- Experience analyzing and validating large-scale simulation results using statistical and visualization techniques.
- Leadership, mentoring, scientific communication, proposal development, technical documentation, and computational science project management skills.
- Ability to work in the United States and comply with U.S. export control and work location requirements.
Nice to have
- Atmospheric or oceanic numerical modeling experience.
- Advanced knowledge of coupled data assimilation methods.
- Experience with JEDI or a similar data assimilation framework.
- Advanced programming skills for scientific model development and data analysis.
