Freelance Language Lead - Games (EN-JPN)

What you will do

• Design game translation tests and scoring rubrics, assess translators and editors, and provide hiring recommendations.
• Create onboarding guides, style guides, glossaries, and error catalogues for game linguists.
• Review game text, names, visuals, and lore for cultural sensitivity and Japanese market compliance.
• Propose cultural adaptation solutions for localized game content.
• Serve as the final reviewer and linguistic escalation point, including in-context LQA and quality reporting.

Requirements

• Japanese: native-level proficiency; English: excellent proficiency.
• 7+ years of experience in game localization, including translation, editing, LQA, or lead roles.
• Proven game translation experience across genres such as strategy, RPG, MOBA, FPS, card, simulation, and casual games.
• Experience evaluating linguists and providing structured feedback.
• Strong understanding of culturalization for Japanese markets.
• Proficiency with CAT tools such as Trados, MemoQ, and Xbench.

Nice to have

• Experience creating training materials or mentoring linguists.
• Experience working with AI or machine-translation workflows.
