Staff Systems Design Engineer (X-ray Metrology)

Location: Milpitas, California, USA; up to 25% global travel required.

Base pay: $186,200–$273,067 annually.

What you will do

• Lead system architecture and technical strategy for next-generation X-ray-based metrology platforms.
• Own system performance planning, modeling, error budgets, and requirements allocation across optics, detectors, mechatronics, vacuum, thermal, controls, and software.
• Drive system-level trade studies, architecture decisions, risk analysis, and validation of performance models.
• Lead multidisciplinary system integration, verification, root-cause investigations, and closure of performance gaps.
• Shape technology roadmaps through feasibility studies, prototyping, demonstrations, and commercialization activities.
• Mentor engineers and align global engineering, manufacturing, service, supplier, and research organizations.

Requirements

• Doctorate with 5 years, master's degree with 8 years, or bachelor's degree with 12 years of related experience.
• Extensive experience in complex system architecture, system engineering, error budgets, performance modeling, and system-level requirements.
• Strong analytical foundation in physics, optics, electronics, mechatronics, controls, or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience delivering capital equipment, instrumentation, or semiconductor manufacturing systems from concept through production.
• Strong programming and data-analysis skills in Python, MATLAB, or equivalent tools.
• Demonstrated technical leadership, communication, mentoring, and ability to resolve ambiguous technical problems.

Nice to have

• Experience with X-ray metrology, scattering systems, computational imaging, or electron/ion-beam instrumentation.
• Experience with AI/ML-assisted system optimization or data-driven metrology.
• Patents, publications, technology roadmaps, or successful commercialization of advanced systems.
