Staff Software Engineer, Government Programs

Location: Northern Virginia, United States. The role involves working in classified environments and requires an active U.S. security clearance; TS/SCI is preferred.

Salary: $228,000–$252,000 per year, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, and evolve scalable, resilient, high-performance systems and foundational platforms.
• Develop shared libraries, backend services, software infrastructure, and customer-facing capabilities.
• Deploy, operate, and maintain platforms in classified environments while meeting security, compliance, and accreditation requirements.
• Own architectural decisions, define success metrics, and resolve production bottlenecks, performance issues, and systemic risks.
• Lead interdependent, multi-month technical initiatives and collaborate with engineering, product, operations, and domain teams.
• Mentor engineers and senior engineers while establishing standards for code, testing, design, reviews, and training.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience in production environments.
• Strong proficiency in Python, C++, or Rust.
• Technical depth in distributed systems, backend services, or platform development.
• Experience building and operating mission-critical services with uptime, reliability, and performance requirements.
• Knowledge of cloud-native infrastructure, including containers, service orchestration, and observability stacks; an active U.S. security clearance is required.

Nice to have

• Experience deploying and operating infrastructure in classified environments.
• Familiarity with government accreditation processes such as ATO and RMF, and with DevSecOps in classified environments.
• Experience with real-time data processing pipelines or high-throughput systems.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, or automated deployment workflows.
• Open-source contributions or technical writing and knowledge-sharing experience.
