TL;DR
Senior Software Engineer (Aerospace): Building mission-planning, scheduling, optimization, and operational-automation systems for spacecraft operations with an accent on Python backend engineering, algorithm development, and high-performance distributed services. Focus on solving large-scale planning problems, improving low-latency system performance, and designing reliable software for satellite constellations and mission-critical workflows.

Location: Hybrid in Washington, DC, United States. Applicants must hold an active U.S. Secret security clearance and satisfy U.S. Government export-control eligibility requirements.

Salary: $140,000–$180,000 per year, plus equity.

What you will do

  • Lead the design and implementation of mission-planning, scheduling, optimization, and operational-automation systems.
  • Develop and validate algorithms for complex planning and resource-allocation problems across large solution spaces.
  • Build high-performance APIs and distributed services for low-latency, compute-intensive workloads.
  • Improve scalability, reliability, observability, and operational readiness of mission-critical systems.
  • Collaborate with software engineers, flight dynamics engineers, satellite operators, frontend engineers, product leaders, and operations.
  • Shape technical direction, mentor engineers, and use automation and AI-assisted development to improve engineering quality.

Requirements

  • Strong Python proficiency and deep experience building and operating production backend systems.
  • Experience with high-performance, low-latency, compute-intensive, or data-intensive software.
  • Applied experience with optimization, scheduling, search, planning, resource allocation, or operations-research methods.
  • Knowledge of algorithms, data structures, computational complexity, performance analysis, APIs, distributed systems, relational databases, containers, cloud applications, testing, CI/CD, and observability.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, aerospace engineering, applied mathematics, operations research, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience; 6+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Active U.S. Secret security clearance and eligibility under U.S. Government export regulations are required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with flight dynamics, orbital mechanics, astrodynamics, spacecraft operations, or aerospace modeling and simulation.
  • Hands-on experience with cislunar mission design, trajectory planning, or Earth-Moon system operations.
  • Experience translating ambiguous operational needs into planning, optimization, and software problems.
