Senior Software Engineer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: US remote eligible; must live in a state where Airbnb, Inc. has a registered entity. Occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites may be required by agreement with the manager.

What you will do

• Design and build backend services and APIs enforcing identity and privacy rules across product surfaces.
• Develop tooling for large-scale migrations away from legacy identity patterns with safe, broad rollouts.
• Define authorization logic for context-scoped data access and handle complex privacy edge cases.
• Partner with messaging, trips, profile, and other teams that build on the identity and privacy systems.
• Participate in design and code reviews, and debug production issues through structured root-cause analysis.

Requirements

• 6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Strong fundamentals in service-oriented architecture, API design, and data modeling.
• Proficiency in Java and/or Kotlin and experience with microservices, RPC frameworks, service IDLs, and dependency injection.
• Experience designing systems where correctness and authorization are first-class concerns.
• Experience shipping migrations or infrastructure changes with backward compatibility and rollout safety.
• Strong written communication and the ability to turn ambiguous identity or privacy requirements into technical designs.
