Senior Backend Developer (Java/Kotlin)

Location: Berlin, Germany; hybrid work with office attendance on Tuesdays and Fridays

What you will do

• Develop backend features for Warhammer 40,000: Tacticus from planning and technical design through development, testing, and live operations.
• Own and improve backend systems supporting a growing live game.
• Build, maintain, and evolve AWS cloud infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code.
• Collaborate with security and compliance specialists to keep development and live environments running smoothly.
• Investigate development and production issues, participate in playtests, and take part in on-call work.
• Work with developers, designers, and other disciplines to shape technical solutions and respond to changing requirements.

Requirements

• Strong professional experience building and operating live services; gaming or LiveOps experience is highly relevant.
• Fluency in Java and/or Kotlin and experience designing and building robust backend systems.
• Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS, and infrastructure-as-code.
• Experience troubleshooting production issues and participating in on-call work.
• Ability to make decisions, adapt to changing priorities, communicate technical reasoning clearly, and collaborate across disciplines.
• Ability to work in a hybrid model from the Berlin studio, with office attendance on Tuesdays and Fridays.
