Patient Financial Counselor

What you will do

• Educate patients about insurance coverage, benefits, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and estimated out-of-pocket costs.
• Assess patients’ ability to pay and provide counseling on payment arrangements and financial assistance for uninsured and underinsured patients by phone or in person.
• Review financial assistance applications using current Federal Poverty Levels and established policies, collect required information and signatures, and route applications to the appropriate teams.
• Set up, maintain, and edit payment arrangements and document account activity in patient management and electronic medical record systems.
• Answer patient account, insurance, and assistance questions promptly, return messages within 24 hours, and support inbound call volume for patient balance collectors.
• Coordinate with front office, clinical, and patient accounting staff while maintaining confidentiality and following organizational procedures.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
• At least 3 years of experience in financial counseling and/or accounts receivable collections, preferably in an oncology healthcare setting.
• Expertise in medical billing insurance policies and regulations, including government and managed care benefit structures.
• Knowledge of clinic office procedures, medical practice, and medical terminology.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, customer service, problem-solving, collaboration, organization, and time-management skills.
• Strong knowledge of Windows-based applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Nice to have

• Experience in radiation oncology or proton therapy.
