Machine Learning Engineer Intern (Risk & Integrity) - 2027 Start (PhD) (AI): Building machine learning systems for large-scale risk and integrity challenges using social graph, behavior sequence, and user search data with an accent on Transformer and GNN architectures, model evaluation, and distributed computing. Focus on designing models for fraud and malicious behavior detection, developing LLM-based agents and alignment techniques, and integrating multimodal signals from video, audio, and text.
Location: San Jose, United States; fully in-person schedule up to 5 days a week
Salary: $60 per hour

What you will do
- Analyze large-scale data, logs, metrics, and experiments to understand user search behavior and improve product or system quality.
- Apply machine learning to integrity challenges involving social graphs and behavioral sequence data.
- Collaborate with engineering, product, data science, and machine learning partners to define requirements and deliver milestones.
- Write maintainable code and documentation for assigned workstreams.
- Communicate progress, risks, and technical learnings to mentors and stakeholders.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Available for a 12-week internship during Summer 2027.
- Strong foundation in machine learning, including applying Transformer and GNN architectures to large-scale integrity problems.
- Experience designing model evaluation systems that balance technical performance with product goals.
- Proficiency in at least one of Python, C++, or Go.
- Familiarity with distributed computing such as Spark or Flink and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
Nice to have
- Experience building LLM-based agents for task planning, tool use, or closed-loop autonomous decision-making.
- Experience with LLM post-training or fine-tuning, including SFT, RLVR, or RLHF, for risk-related domains.
- Experience with video understanding or multimodal representations combining visual, audio, and textual features.
