Safety Engineering Manager - Mining Deployments (Autonomous Vehicles)

Location: San Francisco, United States; onsite five days a week

Base salary: $195,000–$240,000 per year, plus potential equity.

What you will do

• Build and maintain safety cases for off-road autonomous trucks, including claims, evidence, limitations, and open issues.
• Lead system and operational hazard analyses and translate findings into engineering requirements and site controls.
• Define test procedures, acceptance criteria, and evidence required before autonomous operation at each site.
• Own commissioning readiness gates, incident intake and triage, investigations, corrective actions, and verified closure.
• Assess the safety impact of software releases, vehicle variants, and site layout changes before deployment.
• Build AI-supported tooling for risk assessments, procedure adaptation, event triage, and cross-site pattern detection while leading a small engineering team.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in systems safety, safety engineering, or a related systems discipline in a safety-critical domain.
• Experience building and defending a safety argument from scratch, including claims, evidence, and structure.
• Strong system-level and operational hazard analysis experience, with judgment in selecting appropriate methods.
• Experience creating investigation, triage, qualification, or equivalent processes and owning their outcomes.
• Ability to lead one or two engineers while personally writing and owning the safety case.
• Working proficiency in Python or SQL and willingness to travel to operational sites when needed.

Nice to have

• Experience with off-road vehicles, heavy vehicles, industrial machinery, mining, quarrying, construction, ports, or agriculture.
• Knowledge of US mine safety regulations, including MSHA Parts 46, 48, and 50.
• Experience commissioning autonomous or remotely operated equipment at customer sites.
• Experience adapting safety methods to new domains or building small teams from the ground up.
