Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Boston, Massachusetts; employees work from the office 4 days a week

Base salary: $150,000–$190,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Set technical direction for cross-cutting initiatives across device APIs, event pipelines, lifecycle management, transport infrastructure, and partner-facing platform services.
• Design and deliver shared platform capabilities, including device state and command APIs, authentication and authorization services, event pipelines, and integration patterns.
• Define reusable API contracts, event schemas, frameworks, libraries, and architectural patterns adopted by multiple engineering teams.
• Lead large multi-engineer initiatives from architecture and implementation through validation and production readiness.
• Drive cross-team alignment, participate in technical councils and design reviews, and mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, pairing, and coaching.
• Establish standards for observability, reliability, incident response, SLAs, monitoring, and support models while using AI-assisted development with rigorous validation.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 10+ years of backend software engineering experience with Staff-level scope and impact.
• Experience leading large technical initiatives end-to-end and defining reusable platform patterns, shared libraries, or integration frameworks.
• Deep proficiency in backend platform engineering, RESTful and/or gRPC APIs, distributed systems, event-driven architecture, Kafka or equivalent, and shared platform design.
• Experience with domain-aligned, independently deployable services, architectural risk management, technical standards, and cross-team technical influence.
• Positive buy-in toward AI-assisted development and practical experience using AI for implementation, debugging, testing, and documentation while maintaining architectural and validation discipline.

Nice to have

• Strong experience with .NET/C# and SQL Server.
• Experience with partner-facing APIs, external integration platforms, Kafka operations and schema design, or device-oriented and IoT backend systems.
• Experience with microservices, domain analysis, incremental monolith migration, observability, incident management, and production operations at scale.
• Experience with AI-assisted tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code, and familiarity with the Model Context Protocol.
