TL;DR
Sr. Intellectual Property Counsel (Biotechnology): Developing and managing a global IP portfolio supporting CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering, therapeutic applications, and gene-editing pipeline programs with an accent on patent prosecution, IP strategy, and biotechnology legal analysis. Focus on conducting FTO and validity assessments, advising on licensing and collaboration agreements, managing patent disputes, and integrating IP considerations into R&D and commercialization decisions.

Location: Cambridge, MA, with the ability to work onsite periodically and travel periodically for legal proceedings or other projects.

Base salary: $268,728–$328,446 per year, plus a performance-based annual cash bonus and equity eligibility.

What you will do

  • Develop and manage a worldwide IP portfolio focused on CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering, therapeutic applications, and gene-editing pipeline programs.
  • Identify patentable inventions with R&D teams and draft, file, and prosecute patent applications through internal and external counsel.
  • Advise scientific, business, and legal stakeholders on patents, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, and IP-related risks.
  • Conduct landscape, freedom-to-operate, infringement, and validity analyses for research, partnerships, and transactions.
  • Support licensing, collaboration, consulting, research, vendor, and manufacturing agreements.
  • Manage IP disputes, PTAB challenges, oppositions, outside counsel, employee training, and cross-functional IP integration.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or LL.M. from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction and registration to practice before the USPTO.
  • 8–10+ years of patent or IP law experience in life sciences, biotechnology, or pharmaceuticals.
  • Proven experience in U.S. and international patent preparation, prosecution, and analysis, including FTO, infringement, validity, and risk assessments.
  • Strong legal drafting, analytical, communication, leadership, mentoring, and outside-counsel management skills.
  • Proficiency with patent searching tools and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice to have

  • Experience with PTAB proceedings, oppositions, or other IP litigation.
  • Familiarity with CRISPR-Cas9, gene editing, or therapeutic development.
  • Advanced scientific degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry, immunology, genetics, structural biology, or a related field.
  • Experience negotiating, drafting, and interpreting license agreements.
