Patent Counsel, Biologics - Global Intellectual Property (AI)

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, with hybrid work. Applicants must be US and Puerto Rico residents; US patent attorney or qualifying European patent attorney credentials are required.

Salary: $178,500–$257,833 per year.

What you will do

• Prepare, draft, file, and prosecute US, EPO, and foreign patent applications for biologics and biotechnology programs.
• Advise Research & Development, Project Management, Business Development, Franchise, CMC, and Industrial Affairs stakeholders on IP strategy.
• Manage patent portfolios, patentability evaluations, freedom-to-operate analyses, validity and non-infringement opinions, and design-around strategies.
• Conduct and direct patent searches, competitive intelligence, portfolio analytics, and predictive modeling, including AI-enhanced workflows.
• Manage post-issuance proceedings, including US IPR and PGR proceedings, EPO oppositions, and patent litigation support.
• Review publications and negotiate IP agreements, including licenses, CDAs, and collaboration agreements.

Requirements

• Graduate degree in biological or biochemical science; a Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
• Registered US Patent Attorney and member of at least one US State Bar, and/or qualified European Patent Attorney with EQE or equivalent qualification.
• 3–5 years of patent law experience in-house at a biopharmaceutical or biotechnology company or with a life sciences law firm.
• Hands-on experience with complex biologics IP matters, including antibodies, peptides, nucleic acids, cytokines, or enzymes.
• Ability to independently manage patent applications from drafting through grant and communicate complex IP concepts clearly.
• Demonstrated AI fluency, including the ability to evaluate AI-generated work for accuracy, legal soundness, hallucinations, and analytical gaps.

Nice to have

• Experience with EPO oppositions, US IPR/PGR proceedings, patent litigation, licensing, M&A due diligence, or business development transactions.
• Experience with antibody formats, gene therapy, bioprocesses, formulations, or drug-device combinations.
• Familiarity with French, German, or Dutch (Flemish).
• Experience building AI tools and workflows through prompt engineering, automation, or custom GPT configurations.
