Assistant Professor in Earth Sciences – Geography (Global Change, Risk, and Resilience): Developing an externally funded research program and teaching geography and Earth Sciences courses on climate change, environmental hazards, social vulnerability, adaptation, and resilience with an accent on quantitative geospatial analysis, qualitative and mixed-methods approaches, and student mentoring. Focus on integrating GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, geospatial data science, and artificial intelligence and machine learning to investigate hazard exposure, risk, decision-making, and resilience.

Location: Bozeman, Montana, United States; full-time campus-based faculty position with a 2/1 teaching split across semesters.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain an independent, externally funded research program in environmental geography, global change, environmental hazards, risk, and resilience.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate Geography and related Earth Sciences courses, including Human Geography, World Regional Geography, Geographic Thought, and Data Science for Climate and Sustainability.
  • Develop curricula combining quantitative geospatial analysis with qualitative and mixed-methods approaches.
  • Advise undergraduate students and recruit, supervise, and mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students.
  • Publish peer-reviewed research, seek external funding, and collaborate with academic, governmental, and professional partners.
  • Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service.

Requirements

  • PhD in Earth Sciences, Geography, Environmental Sciences, or a related discipline by the start date, with research focused on global change, environmental hazards, social vulnerability, or related fields.
  • Evidence of potential for effective teaching at lower-division, upper-division, and graduate levels, including large introductory courses.
  • Peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage and demonstrated potential to establish a competitive externally funded research program.
  • Potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate mentoring.
  • Expertise or demonstrated potential in quantitative and programmatic approaches, including geospatial methods, GIS, remote sensing, spatial statistics, geospatial data science, or artificial intelligence and machine learning.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and a commitment to supporting students from all backgrounds.

Nice to have

  • Experience teaching large lower-division classes or using computational methods and emergent learning platforms.
  • Research relevant at international and regional scales.
  • Experience integrating multiple research and teaching areas related to global change, risk, resilience, and environmental hazards.
