Spacecraft Systems Engineer II, Avionics (Aerospace): Designing, integrating, and testing avionics systems for Varda’s Winnebago spacecraft with an accent on electrical architecture, fault mitigation, and mission readiness. Focus on building HITL testbeds, verifying flight hardware, supporting reentry operations, and developing automated ground infrastructure.

Location: On-site in El Segundo, California, United States

Salary: $119,543–$152,749 per year, plus potential stock options and/or long-term cash awards

What you will do

  • Define avionics project scopes and requirements with cross-functional engineering teams, guiding designs from concept through production.
  • Develop electrical architectures, system diagrams, and budgets covering power, telemetry, channel count, size, and mass.
  • Analyze system faults and risks, create mitigation plans, and support Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery (FDIR) or operational workarounds.
  • Plan and execute verification for avionics systems on flight and Hardware In The Loop (HITL) hardware.
  • Support mission operations, determine system health, recommend corrective actions, and contribute to reentry commit decisions.
  • Integrate Winnebago avionics, build and operate HITL testbeds, and develop ground infrastructure, test racks, and automated testing practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience in system design, test planning, and validation.
  • Proficiency in programming and debugging with Python.
  • Experience with power supplies, modular DAQ systems, RTD and 4–20 mA devices, and general test equipment.
  • Experience with vehicle electrical systems, HITL testbeds, configuration control, or system-level testing is relevant to the role.
  • Must be a U.S. person authorized to work in the United States and permitted to access export-controlled technology without an export license.

Nice to have

  • Experience taking vehicle electrical systems from concept through operational production.
  • Experience developing test cases and test equipment for vehicle operating conditions.
  • Familiarity with Unix environments and command-line utilities.
  • Strong project or program management skills.
  • Background in avionics hardware, FPGA engineering, electronics testing, or electrical systems engineering.
