Principal Network Engineer (Transport Engineering)

Location: United States of America. Up to 10% travel may be required for critical site deployments, carrier turn-ups, and transport resiliency reviews.

Salary: $120,000–$170,000 per year, plus eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus.

What you will do

• Lead transport engineering strategy, standards, and architecture for enterprise WAN, internet, cloud, and inter-site connectivity.
• Define requirements for circuit ordering, carrier selection, bandwidth, service types, demarcation, handoffs, and redundancy.
• Develop circuit acceptance, failover, performance-baseline, and recurring resiliency testing standards.
• Oversee circuit lifecycle management from business requirements and design through implementation, documentation, support, and decommissioning.
• Partner with carriers, managed service providers, sourcing, facilities, security, cloud, and infrastructure teams.
• Serve as a senior escalation point for transport, carrier, routing, latency, packet-loss, diversity, and resiliency issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, telecommunications, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of experience in transport engineering, telecommunications, carrier connectivity, WAN services, or circuit lifecycle management.
• Deep experience with DIA, MPLS, Ethernet, broadband, wavelength services, cross-connects, cloud on-ramps, and private connectivity.
• Expertise in carrier ordering, LOA/CFA workflows, demarcation coordination, circuit acceptance, provider escalation, and resilient transport design.
• Advanced troubleshooting skills for latency, jitter, packet loss, asymmetric routing, MTU, carrier handoffs, and failover behavior.
• Ability to lead design reviews, mentor engineers, influence technical direction, and communicate technical risks, resiliency, and cost considerations.

Nice to have

• Experience with global transport transformation, carrier migrations, circuit refreshes, SD-WAN underlay readiness, and WAN modernization.
• Experience with AWS Direct Connect, Azure ExpressRoute, private cloud interconnects, and internet egress design.
• Experience managing global carriers, telecom vendors, managed network providers, and critical escalation processes.
• Familiarity with circuit inventory, cost optimization, contract lifecycle, decommission tracking, and telecom expense management.
• Relevant telecommunications, carrier Ethernet, MEF, cloud connectivity, or WAN services certifications or training.
