Animal Technician I (Biotech)

Location: 100% onsite at the Christiansburg, Virginia facility; predominantly overnight 10-hour shifts from 5:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m., including weekends and holidays, with day-shift availability required as needed.

Salary: $30.05 per hour

What you will do

• Provide daily feeding, handling, movement, basic treatments, and reproduction-related care for pigs in a designated pathogen-free facility.
• Clean, disinfect, maintain, mow, and trim the facility and its surrounding areas.
• Maintain animal husbandry, animal care, cleaning, and facility records in accordance with GDP expectations.
• Assist the veterinary team with operations, animal care, sample collection, storage, shipment, and inventory.
• Follow standard operating procedures and quality assurance requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least one year of experience in large-animal care and handling.
• Working knowledge of animal husbandry, including nutrition, reproduction, and safety.
• Ability to lift 75 pounds to waist level and push or pull 200 pounds on wheels.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to author and follow SOPs.
• No interaction with pigs outside the company is permitted.

Nice to have

• Associate degree in animal science or a related field.
• Experience in swine production, medical testing, behavioral observation, sample collection, medication administration, or facility maintenance.
• Knowledge of animal welfare and federal regulations involving animal research, including USDA, FDA, and DEA requirements.
• Mechanical, electrical, plumbing, data-recording, and operational-planning skills.
