People Operations Lead (AI/Biology)

Location: San Francisco, United States; coordination across teams in Tokyo and San Francisco.

What you will do

• Own compensation structures, leveling, equity scenario modeling, and benchmarking for new roles.
• Plan and run performance review cycles.
• Manage onboarding and offboarding end to end, including communications, background checks, I-9 verification, system access, and departing-employee accounts.
• Coordinate employment immigration with counsel, including O-1 petitions, OPT/EAD cases, and green card renewals.
• Administer Justworks, benefits, open enrollment, state registrations, and international employment through EOR arrangements.
• Build people policies, the employee handbook, compliance practices, and scalable processes; support employee relations, terminations, offer letters, CIIAs, and office move planning.

Requirements

• Experience running People Operations at an early-stage company and building systems from the ground up.
• Hands-on experience with U.S. employment immigration, including O-1, OPT, and H-1B processes.
• Knowledge of startup compensation, salary bands, leveling, equity, and trade-off modeling.
• Experience with PEO and EOR platforms such as Justworks, multi-state employment, and international compliance.
• Sound judgment with sensitive employee matters, including knowing when to involve legal counsel.
• Authorization to work in the United States is required; employment verification is conducted through Form I-9 and E-Verify.
