Senior Director, Data Engineering (AI)

Location: California - San Francisco, United States

Base salary: $218,400–$365,200 annually; $263,200–$401,400 annually in select San Francisco and New York City metropolitan areas.

What you will do

• Lead a roughly 40-person data engineering organization and own the full data engineering stack.
• Design data APIs, MCP servers, semantic interfaces, and machine-readable metrics layers for AI agents.
• Build streaming data infrastructure, real-time data products, and low-latency retrieval capabilities.
• Develop agentic analytics tooling for automated queries, anomaly detection, insights, and recommendations.
• Establish AI-native observability with LLM-aware tracing, token and cost attribution, and quality metrics.
• Own the roadmap, reliability standards, cost optimization, hiring, and cross-functional operating model.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data platform, or infrastructure engineering, including 5+ years in engineering leadership at Director level or above.
• Experience building and scaling ingestion pipelines, warehouses, semantic or metrics layers, and data platforms for consumer or enterprise SaaS.
• Experience leading organizational change, multi-team integrations, and partnerships with Data Science or Analytics leadership.
• Strong record of hiring, developing, and retaining engineering managers and senior individual contributors.
• Excellent cross-functional communication and executive-level technical strategy presentation skills.
• Related technical degree required.

Nice to have

• Experience building data platforms for AI/ML workloads, model training, feature serving, RAG retrieval, or agent-driven queries.
• Understanding of LLMs, AI agents, embeddings, vector search, MCP, function calling, and structured or unstructured data access.
• Experience with AI-assisted analytics, AI developer tools, data-as-a-product, APIs, SDKs, experimentation platforms, or A/B testing infrastructure.
• Familiarity with warehouse infrastructure, streaming ingestion, semantic layers, OLAP systems, and Airflow-like orchestration.
