TL;DR
Chemist-Coating Specialist (Chemical Manufacturing): Developing and optimizing papermaking and off-line coating processes, conducting laboratory and machine trials, and improving product quality with an accent on process chemistry, cost reduction, and continuous improvement. Focus on designing and evaluating manufacturing equipment and processes, determining Critical to Quality specifications, and executing technically rigorous product and capital projects.

Location: Brownville and Lowville, New York mills, United States. The role is onsite and includes travel of up to 10%, excluding local travel to service providers, customers, and internal mill locations.

Salary range: $80,600–$127,400 per year.

What you will do

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of manufacturing equipment and processes to support new product development, process optimization, and cost reduction.
  • Drive quality performance and continuous improvement across papermaking and off-line coating processes.
  • Conduct laboratory and machine trials, develop trial plans, and support new product development.
  • Define and test Critical to Quality specifications, analyze process capability, and address quality concerns.
  • Manage supplier quality issues and collaborate with Operations, Technical, Procurement, customers, and other cross-functional partners.
  • Prepare technical reports, support capital projects, manage intellectual property, and execute projects through the Stage-Gate process.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, pulp and paper science, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of manufacturing experience in paper or coating operations.
  • Experience with process troubleshooting, analytical problem-solving, and continuous improvement; Lean and Six Sigma experience is preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate equipment and processes using chemistry, control strategies, mechanical integrity, thermodynamics, mass transfer, fluid dynamics, and energy transfer.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications, quality databases, and ERP systems; DCS/QCS knowledge is preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, quantitative, organizational, presentation, and training skills, with the ability to work in a matrixed and fast-paced production environment.

Nice to have

  • Saturation and coating application or formulation experience.
  • Lean and Six Sigma experience.
  • DCS/QCS knowledge.
