Applied Scientist (Traffic Technology)

Location: Madrid, Spain; hybrid work with two office days per week and three days that may be worked from the office or home.

What you will do

• Design and evaluate algorithms that transform noisy, incomplete probe data into reliable speed and closure information for traffic services.
• Prototype algorithms in Python, implement them in Java production services, and own changes through rollout.
• Develop against ground truth and use evaluation results to guide future product development.
• Evolve traffic services used by millions of drivers across more than 70 countries.
• Use AI coding assistants for exploration, implementation and analysis while reviewing outputs and retaining full accountability.
• Run production systems collaboratively, including monitoring, incident management and production support.

Requirements

• PhD, or a Master’s degree plus 3 years of industry experience, in computer science, mathematics, physics or another quantitative field.
• Python experience for prototyping and data analysis, plus production experience with Java or a comparable typed language.
• Experience taking algorithmic work from idea to production, making trade-offs and explaining them to engineers and stakeholders.
• Hands-on experience using AI tooling in daily development, with a clear understanding of its benefits and limitations.
• Collaborative approach, strong written and verbal communication skills in English, and ability to work in an international environment.

Nice to have

• GIS, traffic engineering or map-matching experience.
• Experience operating production services with Azure or another cloud, CI/CD, monitoring and incident handling.
• Experience aligning teams behind a technical initiative and delivering it through completion.
