Principal Software Engineer (Marketplace Technology)

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States; onsite at the Crossman Service Building

Annual salary: $143,000–$286,000, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation.

What you will do

• Lead platform engineering initiatives delivering scalable infrastructure, reusable tooling, and AI/ML frameworks.
• Architect and implement highly available, fault-tolerant cloud-native distributed systems.
• Oversee coding, testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and the broader software development lifecycle across multiple teams.
• Integrate AI agents and intelligent applications using model-driven design principles.
• Define technical architecture and standards, provide mentorship, and conduct code reviews.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, DevOps, and business stakeholders to define requirements, measure outcomes, and improve reliability.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant computer science or engineering field with 5 years of software engineering experience, or 7 years of software engineering experience; a master’s degree with 3 years of experience is preferred.
• Experience building highly available, high-performance, redundant, and scalable distributed systems and documenting high- and low-level technical designs.
• Experience designing high-performance microservices and low-latency REST APIs using Golang, Java, and Scala.
• Experience with Kafka event-driven systems, Cassandra, DB2, and query optimization for high-load environments.
• Experience with profiling, concurrency, caching, monolith-to-microservices refactoring, and Kubernetes deployment.
• Experience with Elastic Search, Logstash, Kibana, CI/CD collaboration, monitoring, incident response, and mentoring junior engineers.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA, assistive technologies, and digital accessibility best practices.
