Staff Software Developer (Pre-ID Relo)

Location: Toronto, Canada

Base pay: CAD 164,500–222,500 per year, with potential bonus, equity rewards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set architectural direction across multiple HCM engineering teams, services, and integration boundaries.
• Lead modernization and re-platforming strategy for live systems while managing migration sequencing and risk.
• Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic capabilities, including retrieval, orchestration, shared services, evaluation, guardrails, and fallback behavior.
• Improve reliability, latency, security, operational readiness, and compliance across the charter.
• Influence technical decisions through design reviews, technical writing, mentoring, and cross-functional alignment.
• Serve as a senior escalation point for complex incidents and contribute to hiring and technical assessment.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production systems at scale.
• Staff-level experience setting technical direction adopted across multiple teams.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, service architecture, API design, and relational and non-relational data modeling.
• Production experience with a backend language such as Java, Kotlin, Go, Python, Ruby, or Node, plus working knowledge of modern front-end frameworks, ideally React.
• Experience with AWS or GCP, containerization, orchestration, and CI/CD at scale.
• Production experience building AI systems, including LLM-backed features, retrieval-augmented architectures, or agentic workflows, with responsibility for quality and operational behavior.

Nice to have

• Experience in HR technology, payroll, workforce management, fintech, or other correctness-sensitive domains.
• Experience with rules engines, calculation or ledger-style systems, configurable workflows, or live-system modernization.
• Experience building shared AI platforms, evaluation infrastructure, technical standards, or governance used across engineering teams.
• Knowledge of SOC 2, GDPR, PIPEDA, CCPA, and employment-data compliance requirements.
