State and Local Affairs Lead (AI)

Location: Remote-friendly within the United States; staff are expected to work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time. Regular travel across the Midwestern United States is required.

Annual salary: $230,000–$265,000 USD

What you will do

• Lead state and local government affairs across the Midwestern United States.
• Build relationships with legislators, governors’ offices, attorneys general, state agencies, mayors, city councils, county commissions, and economic development boards.
• Track legislation and regulatory proceedings affecting AI and technology, analyze developments, and represent Anthropic’s policy positions.
• Build partnerships with chambers of commerce, economic development groups, labor organizations, universities, and school districts.
• Represent Anthropic at hearings, regional events, and public forums, including with audiences skeptical of AI.
• Coordinate policy, communications, legal, executive, external advisor, and registered lobbyist activities across the region.

Requirements

• Experience in state and local government affairs, political strategy, or legislative roles, with demonstrated success contributing to legislative or regulatory outcomes.
• Existing relationships with state and local leaders in the Midwest.
• Strong understanding of state legislatures, executive branches, committee processes, legislative and regulatory procedures, and local authority.
• Track record of executing strategic objectives and delivering measurable government affairs outcomes.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education, training, or professional experience in a relevant field.
• Willingness to travel regularly across the region and work from an Anthropic office at least 25% of the time.

Nice to have

• 8+ years of experience in state and local government affairs, political strategy, or legislative roles.
• Experience with technology policy, emerging technology regulation, coalition building, or external partnerships.
• Experience translating complex technical topics into accessible language and developing policy campaign messaging with communications teams.
• Experience managing multiple priorities and stakeholder relationships across different states.
