Backend Engineer (Payments and Revenue Infrastructure)

Location: On-site in Toronto GTA, Canada

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate backend systems for global payments and payouts across providers, currencies, and banking rails.
• Develop integrations with payment platforms, banks, payroll providers, and financial systems, including APIs, webhooks, retries, settlement, and failure handling.
• Automate reconciliation across payouts, invoices, bank transactions, operational records, and accounting systems.
• Build invoicing, billing, collections, payment tracking, and revenue recognition workflows.
• Design reliable financial workflows with idempotency, transaction integrity, observability, audit trails, permissions, and safe recovery.
• Partner with finance and operations to replace manual, spreadsheet-heavy processes with scalable internal tools.

Requirements

• 3–5 years of backend development experience focused on payment systems, distributed systems, or cloud infrastructure.
• Strong experience building production backend and distributed systems where correctness, reliability, and data integrity are critical.
• Experience with high-concurrency business systems and services.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language: C++, Java, Go, Python, or Shell.
• Understanding of APIs, databases, concurrency, idempotency, retries, transaction boundaries, event-driven systems, and reconciliation.
• Experience owning production-critical systems, including monitoring, incident response, debugging, and root-cause remediation.

Nice to have

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a similarly rigorous technical discipline.
• Experience at a leading fintech, payments, consumer, or marketplace platform.
• Experience with wallets, ledgers, payout systems, payment orchestration, billing infrastructure, reconciliation engines, or financial data platforms.
• Familiarity with cross-border payments, FX, multi-currency settlement, local payment rails, and multiple jurisdictions.
• Knowledge of double-entry accounting, revenue recognition, accrued and unbilled revenue, deferred revenue, AP/AR, clearing accounts, invoicing, and settlement.
