Senior Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid for candidates based in the Austin or Atlanta metro area, with three days per week in the office

Salary: $116,000–$195,000 national base salary per year

Commerce operates an AI-driven commerce ecosystem including BigCommerce, hirify.global, and Makeswift, helping businesses connect commerce tools and systems and grow across channels.

What you will do

• Build and maintain features in the service powering BigCommerce storefronts.
• Shape requirements and technical designs with product managers and partner engineering teams, then deliver changes to production.
• Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while maintaining backward compatibility for headless storefronts and third-party integrations.
• Evolve the storefront service for AI-driven shopping, including agent browsing, cart building, and checkout.
• Investigate production issues, improve performance and reliability, review code, and participate in design reviews and pairing.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience building backend services used in production.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, software, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
• Production experience with Scala or Kotlin; experience with Java or Go and willingness to learn Scala is also considered.
• Experience translating stakeholder requirements into technical designs and delivering them to production.
• Working knowledge of HTTP, GraphQL, service-to-service communication, caching, production debugging, automated testing, and CI/CD.
• Regular use of AI coding assistants and interest in how AI agents use APIs, including MCP and tool calling.
