Senior Software Design Lead (AI)

Location: San Francisco, California; candidates must be based in the United States and have unrestricted US work authorization.

Salary: $130,000–$150,000 USD per year

What you will do

• Architect the human and technical systems behind digital products and AI experiences.
• Collaborate with product designers, strategists, and design researchers on 8–12+ week engagements from product vision through end-to-end build.
• Build advanced prototypes using real data, models, APIs, and integrations.
• Advise client executives and engineering teams on technology choices, build-versus-buy decisions, APIs, LLMs, and feasibility.
• Design agent and system behavior, including guardrails, failure states, and legibility for people and machines.
• Create reusable starter kits and toolkits, coach designers who prototype in code, and help scope technical work for proposals.

Requirements

• 6–8+ years of experience shipping production software and taking products from concept to launch.
• 1–2+ years as an engineering lead or solutions architect, including project scoping, estimation, planning, and architecture decisions.
• Strong foundations in systems design, data modeling, APIs, performance, security, and scalability.
• Fluency with a modern stack such as TypeScript, React, Python, Node, AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Hands-on experience with LLMs, tool use, agents, retrieval, evaluations, real data, and integrations.
• Must be based in the United States, have unrestricted US work authorization, and must not require visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with Figma, design systems, and front-end craft.
• Client-facing, consulting, or UX research experience.
• Experience with hardware or connected devices, including Arduino or IoT.
