Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Sunnyvale, California or Bellevue, Washington, United States. Access to export-controlled information requires U.S. person status, eligibility without export authorization, or a reasonable likelihood of obtaining authorization.

Base salary: $182,000–$242,000 per year, plus discretionary bonus, equity awards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead engineering execution across the open-source marimo ecosystem and molab, including staffing, technical planning, dependencies, and releases.
• Manage and mentor engineers, support career development, and help hire and onboard new teammates.
• Shape architecture and technical direction through design reviews and tradeoff evaluation.
• Balance community feature requests with user needs, product principles, and long-term maintainability.
• Improve engineering productivity and software quality through CI/CD, automated testing, code review, and release practices.
• Establish reliable production practices for molab, including observability, incident response, capacity planning, API design, and hotfixes.

Requirements

• 5+ years of software engineering experience and 2+ years of engineering management experience leading senior engineers and technical leads.
• Proficiency in Python and strong language-agnostic software engineering fundamentals.
• Experience contributing to open-source projects and leading architecture and design reviews.
• Experience with automated testing, CI/CD, code review, production services, performance, availability, on-call rotations, and incident response.
• Ability to establish documented workflows and evaluate processes that support team growth.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice to have

• Experience maintaining and growing a widely used open-source project.
• Experience building developer tools for AI, machine learning, or data.
• Familiarity with Prometheus, Grafana, alerting systems, Kubernetes, and modern CI/CD practices.
• Experience using AI to accelerate engineering processes and translating user or contributor feedback into improvements.
