TL;DR
R&D Technician - First Shift (Fusion Energy): Building and preparing magnet prototypes while supporting product development, process monitoring, equipment maintenance, and manufacturing readiness with an accent on mechanical and electrical assembly, vacuum systems, cryogenics, and precision tooling. Focus on troubleshooting R&D equipment, improving production processes, maintaining safe operations around high voltage and cryogenic environments, and supporting cross-functional technical teams.

Location: Devens, Massachusetts, United States; on-site, first shift

Salary: $30–$45 per hour, plus equity and benefits

What you will do

  • Build new products and magnet prototypes and prepare them for internal and external evaluation.
  • Monitor processes, troubleshoot production issues, identify viable solutions, and support continuous improvement.
  • Set up, operate, troubleshoot, and maintain R&D equipment, including preventive maintenance.
  • Support installation and readiness activities for new projects.
  • Assist senior R&D staff with testing, specifications, manufacturing processes, and procedures.
  • Maintain project records and provide technical support to quality, engineering, operations, and management teams.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, equivalency certificate, or higher.
  • At least 3 years of experience using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring tools.
  • 3–5 years of technical support experience, including mechanical or electrical assembly, plumbing, vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, soldering, or wiring.
  • Ability to work on-site in Devens, Massachusetts.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work around heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, high voltage, and cryogenics.
  • Willingness to work occasional nights, weekends, on-call shifts, or travel when required.

Nice to have

  • Experience with composites fabrication, prepreg layup, vacuum resin infusion, mold fabrication, epoxy potting, or injection molding.
  • Experience with winding equipment, high-temperature superconducting materials, cryogenic chemicals, machine shop equipment, forklifts, cranes, or lifting operations.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and P&IDs, and experience with PLC or data analysis software.
  • Massachusetts 3A hoisting license.
  • Strong root cause analysis, planning, organization, communication, computer, and problem-solving skills.
