Principal Engineer, Duo Agent Platform (AI)

Location: Remote in Canada, Poland, the United Kingdom, or the United States

Salary: $250,000–$325,000 USD annually for United States residents

What you will do

• Set technical direction and develop the roadmap for a significant area of the Duo Agent Platform across multiple teams.
• Build reliable agent orchestration covering session lifecycles, tool invocation, context assembly, concurrency, retries, timeouts, and graceful failure handling.
• Design extensibility for custom agents, flows, internal tools, and external agents such as Claude Code and Codex.
• Drive model routing, evaluation, cost, and latency improvements for agentic requests.
• Build governance and safety controls covering permissions, identity, human-in-the-loop checkpoints, traceability, and auditability.
• Mentor senior engineers, contribute to incident management, and participate in technical hiring.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years at Staff, Principal, or equivalent senior technical leadership level.
• Production experience with large language models, agent loops, tool calling, context management, retrieval, and model evaluation.
• Strong distributed-systems background, including fault tolerance, observability, service decomposition, and operational resilience under multi-tenant load.
• Experience designing evaluation frameworks, safety guardrails, human-in-the-loop controls, and responsible AI practices.
• Ability to align Engineering, Product, Infrastructure, and Security teams and mentor senior engineers across teams.
• Comfort working with Ruby, Go, Python, or TypeScript in a fully remote, globally distributed organization.
