TL;DR
Channel Development Sr. Staff Engineer (HAMR): Developing channel-enabled architectures, detection methods, and recording technologies for high-capacity, high-performance, reliable hard disk drives with an accent on signal processing, magnetic recording, and physics-informed channel optimization. Focus on designing channel models, tuning HAMR systems in factory processes, performing drive-level experiments, and validating new technologies through bench testing and waveform analysis.

Location: Longmont, United States. On-site product-design campus role with up to 10% travel.

Base salary: $132,974–$176,196 per year.

What you will do

  • Design channel-enabled architectures and component technology bundles to improve drive capacity, performance, and reliability.
  • Develop channel detection, optimization, adaptation, and tuning techniques for current and future physical recording channels.
  • Collaborate with channel vendors and guide head, media, and drive teams on read/write channel design feedback and screening.
  • Perform bench testing with drive mules and drive-level HAMR recording experiments.
  • Create channel models using synthesized and real waveforms to demonstrate new system technologies.
  • Contribute to patents, invention disclosures, trade secrets, journal articles, and white papers.

Requirements

  • Expertise in communications channels, including signal processing, information theory, modulation codes, error correction codes, equalization, and timing recovery.
  • Experience with lab data acquisition and analysis instruments such as oscilloscopes, digitizers, GPUs, and spectrum analyzers.
  • Programming experience with CUDA, C++, Fortran, or Python.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, team leadership, organization, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering or science field with 12+ years of experience, master’s degree with 8+ years, PhD with 5+ years, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to work on-site in Longmont, United States.

  • Queuing theory or AI expertise.
  • Magnetic recording knowledge, including recording physics and head, media, preamp, and channel interactions.
