Senior Staff, Product Safety Engineer (Robotics)

Location: Waltham, Massachusetts, United States. Full-time onsite role with up to 10% travel for training and conferences. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Base salary: $135,000–$167,000 per year.

What you will do

• Provide independent safety assurance across hardware, software, firmware, controls, AI/ML, perception, actuation, and human-robot interaction.
• Support readiness reviews and safety gate sign-offs for autonomous navigation, dynamic locomotion, manipulation, and AI-enabled behaviors.
• Develop and evaluate V&V strategies, acceptance criteria, test coverage, risk controls, and objective safety evidence.
• Assess safety claims, mitigations, residual risk, and change impacts for releases, firmware updates, model changes, configurations, and hardware revisions.
• Support incident investigations, corrective actions, post-market monitoring, and the integration of field learning into safety assurance.
• Translate regulations, standards, and certification expectations into internal safety policies and engineering processes.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical, computer, mechanical, or systems engineering, robotics, or a related discipline.
• 6+ years of experience in product safety, systems safety, functional safety, safety assurance, V&V, robotics, autonomous systems, or another safety-critical field.
• Understanding of AI/ML safety implications and AI-enabled system V&V.
• Strong systems engineering knowledge across hardware, software, firmware, controls, sensors, actuators, and cyber-physical systems.
• Experience with safety-critical software, release processes, configuration management, hazard analysis, FMEA/FMECA, STPA, STAMP, risk assessment, or equivalent methods.
• Familiarity with IEC 61508, ISO 21448/SOTIF, ISO 13849, IEC 62061, ISO 42001, ISO/IEC TS 22440, the EU AI Act, or applicable robotics safety standards.

Nice to have

• Experience with safety certification, regulatory submissions, audits, or external safety assessments for autonomous, mobile, industrial, humanoid, quadruped, or other robotic systems.
