Safety Threat Investigator, Safety Investigations

Location: San Mateo, California, United States. Hybrid office schedule: onsite Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $154,970–$184,570 USD base pay annually, plus potential equity compensation and benefits.

What you will do

• Manage repeatable, high-sensitivity investigations involving serious safety threats, including child exploitation, violent extremism, organized fraud, compromised accounts, and coordinated abuse.
• Define investigation scope, hypotheses, evidence plans, milestones, risk controls, and closure criteria for sensitive or ambiguous matters.
• Gather, preserve, analyze, and corroborate evidence while maintaining provenance, confidentiality, auditability, and accurate case documentation.
• Conduct account, entity, and timeline linkage; identify cases requiring attribution, network mapping, cross-platform research, or escalation to Specialized Investigations.
• Prepare case summaries and downstream work product for Legal, Safety Intelligence, Trust & Safety Operations, Law Enforcement Operations, and NCMEC.
• Improve investigation playbooks, evidence standards, triage processes, tooling requirements, and quality-review mechanisms while mentoring other investigators.

Requirements

• 4+ years of experience conducting sensitive investigations involving severe safety, abuse, fraud, security, threats, or other high-risk matters.
• Experience independently managing investigations end-to-end, from intake and scoping through evidence development, analysis, recommendations, and follow-through.
• Experience with SQL and/or Python, large datasets, and open-source intelligence in an investigative context.
• Experience with attribution, account or entity linkage, network analysis, external intelligence, or cross-platform research.
• Strong written and verbal communication, investigative judgment, discretion, curiosity, resilience, and evidence-based decision-making.
• Demonstrated mentorship, informal leadership, or subject-matter expertise, with the ability to influence partners in high-stakes situations.
