Principal API Architect (Agent-Ready APIs)

Location: Dublin, Ireland; hybrid Flex Work with at least 50% of each quarter spent in the office or in the field

Base salary: €104,000–€156,000 per year, plus potential bonus and annual refresh stock grants.

What you will do

• Define and evolve API architecture, governance models, standards, and review processes across Product Engineering.
• Design product capabilities end to end, including domain models, service boundaries, object models, API endpoints, and integration flows.
• Establish standards for OpenAPI contracts, resource modeling, authentication, authorization, multi-tenancy, error handling, retries, idempotency, versioning, and deprecation.
• Define reference architectures for agent-ready APIs, orchestration patterns, data-centric APIs, Data Cloud or SQL projections, latency, and observability.
• Lead cross-team API design reviews, resolve high-impact architectural decisions, and shape API investment prioritization.
• Mentor engineers and managers, build API communities of practice, and communicate API strategy to senior stakeholders.

Requirements

• 12+ years of experience building large-scale, mission-critical backend systems and APIs, including cross-team or organization-wide architecture responsibility.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience with object-oriented modeling, domain modeling, abstraction, encapsulation, extensibility, and maintainable service design.
• 5+ years designing scalable, secure API endpoints that expose product functionality and driving technical standards across multiple teams.
• Hands-on experience with Java, TypeScript, or Python and REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, and Swagger/OpenAPI.
• Strong expertise in distributed systems, cloud architecture, high-throughput and low-latency services, horizontal scaling, fault tolerance, gateways, authentication, throttling, and rate limiting.
• Experience with API governance, observability, SLOs, data platforms, analytical stores, agentic AI integrations, and enterprise APIs.

Nice to have

• Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot.
• Familiarity with Data Cloud or equivalent data platforms and safe, efficient data exposure patterns.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
