Legal and Product Engineer (Japanese Speaking)

Location: Hybrid role based in London or New York, with regular travel to Japan

Salary: $100K–$220K annually, plus significant equity

What you will do

• Partner with the AI team to improve algorithms and prompt engineering for patent claim analysis, prior art comparison, and obviousness assessments.
• Build proprietary datasets, legal benchmarks, and evaluation frameworks based on USPTO and international patent office requirements.
• Translate insights from patent practitioners and global law firms into high-priority product features.
• Lead technical pilots, product demonstrations, and strategic discussions with IP teams and law firms.
• Develop playbooks for AI adoption across biotech, deep-tech software, and other sectors.
• Lead the Japan market effort, including Japanese-language patent workflows, JPO readiness, conferences, and client meetings.

Requirements

• Admitted to practice before the USPTO, EPO, or JPO.
• At least 3 years of direct patent prosecution experience.
• Undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, or life sciences.
• Native or business-level Japanese proficiency, equivalent to JLPT N1, required for detailed technical and legal discussions.
• Must be based in London or New York and able to travel regularly to Japan.
• Comfortable translating between patent law, product requirements, and AI engineering concepts.

Nice to have

• Hands-on experience with prompt engineering and LLM tools.
• Experience managing client relationships and leading strategic product demonstrations.
• Existing relationships with Japanese law firms or corporate IP departments.
